Other F.A.Q.s

No, olive oil does not expire. That is, there is no date from which its consumption may be harmful to health. What can happen is that, after a certain time, the product begins to lose part of its attributes due to the oxidation process. To prevent this from happening, a preferred consumption date is set, a date from which it’s not guaranteed that all its original properties will be maintained.

In the case of extra virgin olive oil, this date is between 18 and 24 months and is influenced by different factors. The most important one is the antioxidant content, which will depend on the variety of olive. One of the main characteristics of the picual variety – the one present in our Cualiva EVOOs – is its high amount of oleic acid and polyphenols, which act as natural antioxidants and slow down the aging and oxidation of EVOO. On the other hand, we must make sure the preservation conditions of the EVOO are the adequates in order to guarantee its durability. You can see this in more detail here.

At Cualiva we offer you both types of early harvest extra virgin olive oil: traditional and organic. To help you understand the characteristics of each one well and prevent us from falling into misunderstandings or preconceptions, we comment on the main differences and similarities between them.

  • The production. In the production of organic oil, the use of chemical products, such as pesticides, pesticides or chemical fertilizers, is totally prohibited.
  • Environmental sustainability. Organic oil provides more environmental sustainability than non-organic.
  • The quality. We must emphasize that the quality does not depend on whether it is organic or not, in the market we can find organic olive oils that are not even virgin or extra virgin and extraordinary non-organic EVOOs with outstanding quality.
To assess the quality of an oil we have to take into account other factors such as the climate, the type of cultivation, the maturity of the olive and the juice extraction process. You can see more detail about this here.
  • Healthy. Ecological oil is highly regulated, to certify that it has a lower amount of chemical residues than its conventional equivalent. However, any olive oil must undergo chemical analysis to achieve certification, whether it is organic or not.

It depends on variables such as the number of people we are or the yield of the olives we pick. It must be taken into account that the yield of this green olive is not very high due to the low maturity of these young olives, hence its maximum quality.

To give you an idea, suppose that our objective is to fill a 500kg trailer and we obtain a 15% yield, that would be equivalent to about 75 liters of early harvest EVOO to distribute among the group.
